Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to pay anything before I start?
No. It is our policy to permit all prospective students to take part in two classes prior to making
any commitment to enroll. We feel that this is fair to the students who wish to make an
informed decision and to the instructors.
Do you need to be fit?
No. Your fitness levels will be assessed when you enrol and it is the responsibility of our
qualified instructors to ensure that they work with each student to ensure that their overall
health and fitness is improved in a way and at a pace which is appropriate.
How many times do you have to train?
We recommend that students train twice a week to ensure adequate progress in terms of
overall physical fitness and technical competence. It is indeed the case that our whole system of
progression is built on the assumption of training twice weekly.
What age do you have to be?
We generally do not accept students younger than 5 years old and there is no upper limit. We
aim to ensure that as many people as reasonably possible have the opportunity to experience
the health benefits of our system of training as well as giving them the opportunity to acquire a
valuable and realistic self defence capability.
What equipment is required?
As a beginner no equipment is required but you will be expected to obtain the correct uniform
and safety equipment such as safety gloves and feet within a few months of enrolling and prior
to any promotional test. In time you may be expected to obtain focus mitts (pads) and a target
shield.
Do adults and children train together?
No. As a rule children of primary school age train separately and whilst we try to assimilate
teenagers into the adult classes, this is dependent upon a number of factors. Where possible
we would seek to train teenagers in a separate class until they are ready to move into the adult
class. There are however a limited number of “family classes” for those who prefer to train as a
family.
Is it possible for me to train with my child?
Yes. Although children and adults normally train separately, we are aware of the benefits of
training as a family and our instructors will do their utmost to accommodate such requirements
where appropriate. As explained above there are a limited number of “family classes” where
we actively encourage families to come and train together.
Can I stay and watch the class while my child trains?
Yes. We encourage all parents to take an active interest in the progress and development of
their children within Sooyang Do and are more than happy for parents to observe their children
training.
Can I observe a class before I join?
Yes. Although we always encourage prospective students to take part we are of course quite
happy for individuals to observe prior to participation.
